Weekend Round Up - seniors have a tough weekend, while juniors are posting up wins

Oxford Brookes women's team started their campaign in Division 1 but had a tough game away to Ipswich who came out 103-37 winners. Basketball England posted the following match report.

"As newcomers to WNBL Division One, Ipswich Basketball Club made a statement on Saturday with their commanding win over Oxford Brookes. The WNBL Division Two champions from a season ago opened up their campaign in the top flight with a dominant first quarter as they outscored the visitors 35-7. Not looking back, the home side continued to pour in the points and stand firm defensively en route to their big margin of victory.

The new-look Oxford squad were led by 14 points and six rebounds from Tessa O'Connor, while Marta Artiles Perez added 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. Meanwhile, for Ipswich, Harriet Welham led all scorers with 25 points, despite struggling from behind the arc, also adding 11 rebounds and seven assists. Cameron Taylor-Willis added 19, while Amy Linton had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Esther Little had a quiet scoring outing with just eight points, but managed to pull down 23 rebounds and add eight assists. "

The Oxford Brookes men also had difficult opposition in Division 3, being defeated 118-68 by Bristol UWE Flyers II.

In Division 4 Men, Oxford Stealers went down to RCT Gladiators 66-56.

However, our juniors fared better:

Judging by the score it was a close game for Oxford Hoops U16s, narrowly going down 65-69 to Milton Keynes Trojans II.

Oxford Hoops' U18s were due to play in the Cup vs Reading Rockets on Sunday, but no score is posted on Basketball England's results page, so we presume this didn't go ahead.

It was a double win over at the Abingdon Eagles with the U14NL team beating Luton 84-57 and the U16NL winning against West Herts Warriors II 97-73. The U16s are top of the South I league by points difference over Luton. It's going to be an interesting season.

The U16s were frustrated by admin errors by MK Trojans, so their Cup game didn't go ahead on Sunday but has been rescheduled for Sunday 7th.

We'll look ahead to next weekend later in the week.
